  3. Marisa,

Great to hear you had a good decade too. Might I interest you in a photo of me standing in New Street Station in Birmingham in 2002 near a train from which Terry Wogan had recently emerged? I could Photoshop it with a photo of an interesting hotdog I had in Poland in 2005…

  5. Anna,

Much as I’d like to oblige, I fear the thrill might be too much for many of my readers… Here’s a photo of New Street Station (http://www.traintesting.com/images/150001_New_Street_21-1-85.jpg), one of me (http://www.pearsonlongman.com/methodology/images/author-GavinDudeney.jpg), one of Terry Wogan (http://entertainers.co.uk/celebrities/Celebrity-Images/terrywogan.jpg) and one of a hotdog (http://www.candyflosscrazy.com/assets/images/hotdog02.gif). A prize is on offer for the best Photoshop treatment of all four…

  6. how absolutely fascinating your decade seems to have been. Mine too. Did some music. Travelled. Wrote. Talked. People everywhere. I mean, like, wow.

  7. Hotdogs, trains and Terry Wogan? Am envious – it really doesn’t get any better!

I second the requesting photos request. Can you make sure the quality is nice and sharp, please, so I can have it enlarged and turned into a poster.

Happy New Year from me, too! :-)

    Alice,

Thanks for commenting. What were the highlights of your decade? Did you have an interesting lunch in an exotic location (such as Manchester, or Berne)? Have you got a photograph of it?

Do you know anyone whose friend once sat next to someone who lost in a semi-final of ‘Belize’s Got Talent’? Have you got a photo of them?

Or perhaps you have a list of ‘My Favourite Desserts of the Noughties’, or similar?

    Do share…

I’d label this decade the “Hotties Noughties.” This decade included getting married (to my own extra special hottie), moving to France, earning a BA and an MA, starting a company, learning French, and meeting hundreds of wonderful people in the ELT world. Just a few hours left to wipe the sweat off my brow, take a sip of Gatorade and dive head first into the next decade.

Well, frankly, I’m unimpressed. I holidayed in the Maldives with Brangelina (our kids got on SO well, it was just, well, what can I say…) – that was after we met at the Oscars ‘after party’. I just knew we’d hit it off. I had to let Sting down, but y’know how it is. Mmmm. Let me think. What else. Oh yes, the dinner date with Leonardo DiCaprio. I’ve got to say, when his mate George turned up I was a bit pissed, three’s a crowd and all, but it was cool and we ended up having a right laugh. I guess the highlight was my birthday party, really. Jamie Oliver could, in all honesty, have tried harder – I really couldn’t care less if Jools was in labour. Lucky Gordon came to the rescue, really. Just a shame that Oasis decked him for being an arrogant twat. So many more stories to tell, but, I don’t want to hog the limelight here, so I’ll be off. Don’t want to keep Eddie waiting, he is SUCH a laugh. Laters!

Some (not me) would demand photographic evidence of all that, but hey – I know what the topsy-turvy world of ELT is like, so I’m with you on all of it. Say hi to Ed for me (his real friends call him ‘Ed’, just so you know for next time)…

The hightlight of the decade is when I found out the inner David Hockney within me ! as I can’t paint, I just met the guy in California, taught him some French as he finds it so sexy and then in return he taught me his Hockneyism secrets (which I won’t reveal here of course), but we had a cool chat and after some bloody marys and a cognac, I was totally inspired. On the plane back to France I thought hard of my next memorable work of art… and here it is, in all its glory :

Much better – chapeau! and all that… I certainly agree with le compte de Champignac – it is a sort of ‘David Hockney magrittisé’. He taught you well, it seems.

I once had some painting lessons with Dalí, but to be honest the old codger couldn’t paint his way out of a paper bag…
